What could be finer than to have an active and varied population of birds in your own backyard? And, what could be more comfortable? You don't even need a backyard; I lived in an apartment for a year and simply hung a bird feeder off the window and was treated to quite an active bird crew just outside my window. The people who lived beneath me were treated to quite a different birding experience.
One note of caution: bird feeders (birds, actually) make an awful mess. Do not place a feeder over a wooden deck since seed casings will pile up and, worse yet, bird poop will sink in and stain.
One more note: You will come to love your backyard and will be delighted to spend time just sitting there enjoying what you have created.
Once you get your backyard bird population established, you will want to participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count each year. It's a neat way to take your personal birding experience to a higher and more communal level. It is also a way to make a real contribution to science since your data will be used in distribution and migration studies.
